Arriving at Incheon with medication
Every verdict on this site ends with the same instruction: declare it at customs. This is what that actually looks like at Incheon airport, step by step.
1. Before you land
Keep the medication and its paperwork in your cabin bag, not checked luggage. Have three things reachable: the medication in original packaging, your prescription or doctor's note, and the MFDS permit if your medication is a controlled substance. Nothing needs to be filled out in advance for medication alone; Korea dropped the universal customs form in 2022, so paperwork applies only if you have something to declare.
2. Immigration and baggage
Medication plays no role at immigration. Collect checked bags as usual; the customs decision point comes at the exit of the baggage hall.
3. The customs exit
Two paths: goods to declare, and nothing to declare. Controlled medication with an MFDS permit goes through the declare channel, where you show the permit, the prescription, and the medication. Uncontrolled medication within six bottles or a three-month supply needs no declaration.
4. If you are asked questions
Answer with the paperwork. The label on the box, the prescription, and the permit answer nearly every question an officer has. This is why repackaging pills into unmarked organizers before the flight is a mistake: it converts a routine check into an inspection.
5. After customs
Trains and buses to Seoul run from inside the terminal. If your medication needs refrigeration, note that the AREX express train to Seoul Station takes 43 minutes; hotel fridges cover storage from there.
Questions
Which customs channel do I take?
If you carry a controlled medication with an MFDS permit, take the goods-to-declare channel and show the permit with the medication. If everything you carry is uncontrolled and within the personal-use line of six bottles or a three-month supply, you have nothing to declare and can exit through the ordinary channel.
What do officers actually look at?
Whether the medication matches its packaging and paperwork. Original packaging with the pharmacy label, a prescription or doctor's note in Korean or English, and, for controlled substances, the MFDS permit. Loose pills in unmarked containers are what draw attention.
Do I need to declare ordinary prescription medicines?
Not within the personal-use allowance. Korean customs treats up to six bottles or a three-month supply of non-controlled medication as personal use. Above that line, declare it on arrival and be ready to show the prescription.
What if I did not get the MFDS permit in time?
Do not carry the controlled medication through without it. Entering with an undeclared controlled substance can end in seizure and criminal charges regardless of your prescription. Contact the MFDS (narcotics@korea.kr) before you fly; unapproved medication is best left at home.
